Werneck Palace
Summer residence of Prince Bishops
The Werneck castle is the little sister of the Würzburg residence. It is the most perfect profane building of Balthasar Neumann. The castle's history was very changeful.1202 a castle was already built here. During the Peasant Wars it got destroyed in 1525. In the middle of the 18th century, Balthasar Neumann built a summer residence for Prince Bishop Friedrich Carl von Schönborn. This palace is preserved till this day. Unfortunately the interior equipment is not retained in the palace anymore. Today the palace is one of the major specialist hospitals for orthopedics.
Fun Fact
Bernhard Gudden, the first director of the psychiatric department, died in the Starnberg lake togehter with Ludwig II. Gudden wrote a report on the king's constitution. The result was the declaration of incompetence and withdrawal of Ludwig II.
