Famous and infamous castle owners
Mainberg Castle is beautifully embedded in the vineyards. On the Main cycle path you cycle directly below the castle. The fortified outer walls of the castle are an impressive sight. Just three kilometers away from Schweinfurt, hikers can see the castle, the meandering Main and the vine-covered Main Valley directly from the "Blick auf Schloss Mainberg" vantage point.
From Sattler to Sachs
A castle has stood here since 1245. Influential and pioneering people lived here. One of them is Wilhelm Sattler. In 1822 he renovated the castle in the Renaissance and Gothic styles.
Fun fact
It is rumored that Sattler murdered Napoleon Bonaparte. At the beginning of the 19th century, the Sattler paint factory produced the "Schweinfurt green" - THE fashion paint in all of Europe. Much loved for its luminosity and color intensity, "Schweinfurt Green" is very arsenic and poisonous. Napoleon probably died of arsenic poisoning.
100 years later, the Sachs family lives at Mainberg Castle. Gunter Sachs was born here in 1932. He later became world famous as a bobsledder, photographer, art lover and jet setter.
