Seditious and ruined
Marktsteinach Castle was a robber baron's nest in the 15th century. The castle owners raised road tolls without any right. Peasants were often the victims of clashes with other rulers. Arson and pillage of the loser's villages and fields were commonplace. The people who lived there were often killed. It is not surprising that the farmers made short work of the castle in 1525 and burned it down to the ground. The remains are visible to this day.
Mill romance
There are six mills alone along the Steinach. The historical buildings, some of them half-timbered farmsteads, create a romantic backdrop for your hike. With a tour guide along the Steinach you will learn a lot of interesting facts about the mills and their former tasks.
Fun fact
Since Barbarossa, the right to fight knightly disputes was only valid Monday through Wednesday. The knights should, if you please, hold back from Thursday to Sunday.
