Birnfeld Palace
Barock and Balthasar Neumann - the classic in Franconia
Birnfeld Castle dates from the end of the 17th century. Here you can see the classic in Franconia in a tried and tested combination. Traces of the famous master builder Balthasar Neumann can be found everywhere in the region. According to his plans, the baroque palace was extended in the 18th century. It still exudes the dignity of the summer residence and hunting lodge of the Würzburg prince-bishops. A retirement home has been located in the castle since the 1960s.
The building was erected by the Würzburg bishopric after a number of leanings from various noblemen. Prince-Bishop Johann Gottfried von Gutenberg built the stately two-storey baroque building in 1692. Prince-Bishop Johann Philipp von Greifenklau, as well as his successor in office, Johann Philipp Franz von Schönborn, are identified as builders by their coat of arms in sandstone. In 1719 the palace was expanded and expanded as a summer residence and hunting lodge according to the famous Balthasar Neumann plans. Today the castle is used as a retirement home.
