Market town Oberschwarzach
Modern viticulture meets tradition and culture: the Oberschwarzach market with its impressive Reniassanceschloss, which Prince-Bishop Julius Echter had built, lies gracefully between the western foothills of the Steigerwald. Oberschwarzach has developed into an attractive excursion destination in recent years.
Already in the Middle Ages there were around 13 hectares of vineyards around Oberschwarzach. Today, characteristic white and red wines from the famous Oberschwarzacher Herrenberg, Handthaler Stollberg, Wiebelsberger Dachs and Kammerforster Teufel vineyards thrive on around 125 hectares. The local winemakers and "Franconian Wine Experience Guide" offer expert tours and wine tastings.
An ascent to the ruins of Stollburg along the "terroir f point" on the world history of viticulture is worthwhile: From the beginnings of wine cultivation in Georgia around 6,000 BC. BC, through the enjoyment of wine in antiquity among the Greeks and Romans to the expansion and mechanization of viticulture in modern times. After extensive hikes or bike tours, the Franconian cuisine tempts you with a glass of Franconian wine in the inns and taverns. Incidentally, the district of Handthal was awarded the title of "Pleasure Location Bavaria".
The "Steigerwald Center - Experience Sustainability" in Handthal also offers an experience. The modern information center is made entirely of wood and impresses with its modern architecture. In a playful and interactive way, young and old learn interesting facts about the Steigerwald, natural forest management and a sustainable lifestyle.
