Places to Visit
Schonungen
The large community of Schonungen, located about six kilometers up the Main from Schweinfurt, impresses with a delightful mix of idyllic landscapes, a wide range of cultural and sports activities and warm hospitality. More than 8,000 citizens appreciate the high quality of life and housing in close proximity to the city of Schweinfurt.
The panoramic south-facing slopes to the Main bank are used for wine-growing. Deeply cut stream valleys, landscape protection areas, meadows, plateaus with a wonderful view, prehistoric monuments, rustic half-timbered and mill houses as well as farmhouses characterize Schonungen and its 13 districts. The magnificent Mainberg Castle, which was the seat of bishops and princes in the past, towers high above the Main. With almost 3,600 hectares, it is one of the most wooded municipalities in the region, but with its breathtaking bay landscapes on the Main it offers even more landscape diversity and recreational value. Countless exciting bike and hiking trails open up the area.
Schonungen is a small center with an excellent infrastructure and transport links and is even a well-known beer brewing and wine-growing community. The modern landmarks of the large community are the eleven wind turbines on Forster Hardberg.
Over a hundred clubs are active and offer a variety of entertainment and leisure opportunities. Traditional festivals, theater performances, cabaret, concerts or readings shape cultural life.
